ESTHER BENDAHAN*
TETUAN, 1964

Born to a Spanish Sephardic family, Esther Bendahan lives in Madrid, where she studied Psychology and French philology, and is currently serving as assistant director of the Madrid TV2 program Shalom. She regularly contributes essays and reports to various publications. Fnac, the bookstore chain, selected her as a “New Talent” for her first novel, Deshojando alcachofas [Peeling Artichokes]. Her world is that of Moroccan Sephardic families exiled in Spain, under the existing hostility and harassment, facing a new culture, feeling nostalgic for what was lost, and experiencing the disintegration of a unique world that can never be replaced. Her sensual, evocative style is fast developing a devoted and large following in Spain.
