Gioconda Belli is one of the pioneering women’s voices in both Nicaragua’s revolutionary poetry and the revolution itself. The hallmark of her poetry is coherence and unity. In 1988 she published her first novel, The Inhabited Woman, since translated into fourteen languages and published in the United States and Germany, where it has sold one million copies. She has, among others, been awarded the following prizes: the 50 Biblioteca Breve Award (Seix Barral, 2008) The Casa de las Américas Poetry Prize (Cuba),The Generation of ‘27 International Poetry Prize (Spain) and The Anna Seghers Prize of the German Academy of Arts. In August 2004 she became a member of the Spanish Royal Academy in Nicaragua.
